Creepy #17 cgc 9.4 Frank Fazetta cover

creepy17_94Frazetta’s classic cover depicts an executioner holding a bloody axe. This would be his last cover for two years. It is also Goodwin's last issue as editor. ‘Thundering Terror!’ was originally entitled ‘Buffaloed’ {a title actually used for another Severin story in 1974} and was retitled by Archie Goodwin.

This was Goodwin's last issue as editor of Creepy, Frazetta would not make another appearance for another 10 issues (Creepy 27 cover).

Vampirella #6 cgc 9.4 Ken Kelly cover

Ken Kelly does his first cover. Comic Book Artist printed layouts for this cover by Ken’s father-in-law, Frank Frazetta. Best story & art belongs to ‘Darkworth!’ with Mike Royer’s best & sexiest renderings! Story revolves around a stripper—always a good subject for a comic strip! Frank Bolle also has two good strips here. Tough dark cover.

Eerie #2 cgc 9.4 Frank Frazetta cover

The first actual magazine issue, this was intended to be the actual #1. Artist Jack Davis did several head illos of Cousin Eerie for story introductions. During this time artist Jerry Grandenetti ghosted pencils for several Orlando stories, all of which were credited solely to Orlando. When Grandenetti started receiving his own credits those ghost pencils stopped. The Frazetta cover painting of a wizard and a demon is awesome.

Ghost Rider #2 CGC 9.0 PDF Print E-mail

Ghost Rider v1 #2, 1950 cgc 9.0 highest graded

ghostrider2For years it was thought the cgc 8.5 Davis Crippen ("D" Copy) Ghost Rider #2 was the highest grade to be found for this book. This copy surpasses the Crippen copy in grade along with page quality (the “D” copy had Cream to Off/white pages), and makes only the second copy of this issue ever to be graded higher than the Fine/Very Fine range (7.0). CGC 9.0 is the highest grade, for an obviously rare book, with only 7 unrestored copies to ever be graded for this issue. The odds of finding another copy of this 60 year old book in equal condition are astronomical.

The first of four Frank Frazetta covers for this western series integrates a horror theme. The Ghost Rider cuts off a demonic stagecoach with a skull-faced driver. This is number 1 of 4 Ghost Rider issues with Frazetta covers. In 1967, with Magazine Enterprise long out of business, Dick Ayers became an employee of Marvel Comics. The policy of the Comics Code became less strict and Marvel along with Dick Ayers re-launched the Ghost Rider character.

After Hours #3 cgc 9.6 PDF Print E-mail

After Hours #3 cgc 9.6 (white) 1957 rare Warren

ah3More rare than the first Playboy,(less copies, lower distribution) and before Famous Monsters, Creepy and Vampirella,
Jim Warren's After Hours #3 in high grade with blinding white pages.
One of the highest and few graded examples of a very hard to find series.
The odds of finding an adult magazine in this condition, rarity and age are slim.

In the 1950s Jim Warren (of Famous Monsters, Creepy & Vampirella) worked in advertising as an artist and writer. Fascinated by the publishing efforts of Hugh Hefner, he launched his own magazine "After Hours", which lasted only four issues. Thus terminated his girlie magazine publishing career, but this period of his life was not without benefits, as during the course of publishing the short-lived magazine, he hooked up with one of his After Hours contributing writers, Forrest J Ackerman. (the guiding hand for Famous Monsters and Vampirella magazines)
This issue contains a Joan Arnold pictorial, a highly sought after model of the time, also an article with photos of Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren.
